Our Story
The Youth Latinx Leadership Conference (YLLC) is a community of Latinx student change-makers based in Southern California who come together for a free annual event to learn from each other and from top Latinx leaders from various occupational and academic fields.
The YLLC was founded in early 2021 by high school students Sophie Szew and Hannah Aguilar with the goal of creating a centralized platform for youth cultural empowerment. The inaugural conference was successful beyond their wildest dreams; hundreds of participants signed up to hear from inspirational leaders including Senator Alex Padilla, Representative Grace Napolitano, Entrepreneurs from companies including Subject, SUMA Wealth, Zone One Productions, poet Carmen Jimenez Smith, and reporters from Spectrum News One and NBC 4.
Since its inaugural conference, the YLLC proved that it would finally be the organization to fill the need for a supportive, centralized community for Latinx Youth from all walks of life. After connecting Spectrum News One reporters at the YLLC to the child care agency Nuevo Amanecer Latino Children's Services (NALCS), the YLLC was able to partake in the effort to create a report which garnered over 500 inquiries about fostering undocumented, unaccompanied Latinx child immigrants through NALCS. The YLLC also partnered with LTX Connect and was recognized during the Voces de la Comunidad Awards presented by Comcast.
